32734. Wheelock, John Hall, 1886-1978. Poems, 1911-1936. New York, Charles Scribner’s Sons, London, Charles Scribner’s Sons, Ltd., 1936, First Edition (A), xx, 245pp., very good blue cloth, light wear to corners, light scuffing on covers, INSCRIBED for Ann Wickes with 16 lines of poetry / signed by John Hall Wheelock, May 3, 1937.. $50
Wheelock belonged to the aristocracy of American poetry, from his days as class poet at Harvard to his many years as editor as Scribner's. He "studied at the University of Göttingen in 1909 and the University of Berlin in 1910. He earned no degree but acquired a few fashionable dueling scars" (Dictionary of American Biography). The inscription may possibly have been directed to the young Ann Wickes (later Brewer) [1922?-2006], the independent-minded daughter of an old New England family (source of the MFA's Foster Wickes porcelain collection). Ann learned to sail at the family's Newport home as a child. When she graduated "from the Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Va., in 1939, Mrs. Brewer set her sights on college, over the objection of her parents. 'They didn't understand that the world had moved on and Mother's own capacity for adventure and friendship,' her daughter said. Mrs. Brewer graduated from Bennington in 1943." (Obituary Boston Globe, 2006). Wheelock seems to have used the same poem as inscription in several, possibly many copies of the book: "Deftly does the dust express / In mind, her hidden loveliness" etc.
