Interesting Wellesley College association: Shackford and Margaret Sherwood were Wellesley Professors and apparently friends of Jeanette Marks, who taught English at Mt. Holyoke for 38 years. Marks was the subject of controversy for her relationship with the President of Mt. Holyoke, Mary Woolley (see 1978 book on this by Anna Wells). Shackford's mother was a born Cartland - Here: A compilation of letters and comments edited by Shackford, Emeritus Professor of English literature at Wellesley College: "printed for the younger descendents of Moses A. Cartland" - "The informality, naturalness, and jesting moods give a pleasant picture of family relationships in a world of Quakers who loved domestic peace but were, nevetheless, ardent Abolitionists." Includes genealogy of Whittier and Cartland families and also reprints the editors 1904 article, A Child's Impressions of Whittier. John Greenleaf Whittier lived: 1807-1892.
