Tremendously influential work of the early 1950s, on the long-term effects of America's lack of a feudal past. His pages on success and failure and the Horatio Alger myth clearly influenced Kenneth Lynn, who heard Hartz's lectures. They also provide some ideas as to why the theory of post-sovereign organizational law-making had to develop in Europe, rather than in the US. The powerful lure of individual success leaves little room for autonomy from the state, only for acceptance or rejection of it.
