Not a study of Berkeley's philosophy, but of his critique of English society in a period of modernization, and his view of the Americas as a pure retrieval of the better past. In other words, a bit of conservative revolution in the 18th century. Joseph Ellis summarized: "the recurring theme in the book, is Berkeley's craving for a pastoral paradise where virtue would reign supreme and the corruptions of European society would be obliterated. The source of Berkeley's utopian vision, Gaustad argues, was his disenchantment with the social and intellectual changes sweeping through England in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Berkeley regarded the development of commerce, bureaucracy, and liberal religious sentiments as harbingers of disaster. Gaustad describes him as a traditionalist, convinced that virtue and Christian self-sacrifice were on the wane, that luxury and venality were on the rise, and that private enterprise - which he saw as disguised selfishness-was taking precedence over the public good. Amer- ica, in short, was a vast screen onto which Berkeley projected his nostalgic vision of the way it was before merchants, freethinkers, officeseekers, and other heralds of progress had corrupted England's soul" (WMQtly, 1980, p.508).
