His main interest was how the spirit of reconstruction was expressed in literature and drama. Talcott Parsons writes in his account of systems theory: "I was ripe to seize the offer of an exchange fellowship to Germany, for which I was recommended by Otto Manthey-Zorn, with whom I had had a seminar in German philosophy at Amherst and who also had much to do with my appointment, a year later, as instructor in Economics at Amherst. I was assigned to Heidelberg, with no personal voice in the matter, but this located me where the influence of Max Weber, who had died five years before, was strongest. It is significant that I do not remember having heard his name either at Amherst or in London" (Daedalus, Fall 1970, pp. 826-27).

Janet Ayer Fairbank (1878-1951) is most likely the Chicago novelist, author of Rich Man, Poor Man, 1936. In his 1999 book on Hindenburg, Harald Zaun calls Wheeler-Bennett's book "unverzichtbare Pflichtlektüre," in part due to the broad access the author had to German politicians, including Heinrich Brüning (who is revealed through a 1946 letter to have been an important informant).
