Craig was one of the American historians to find great success in German translation as well, perhaps due to his ability to combine political and literary history in fine story-telling. His career went from a glimpse of Nazi Germany in the 1930s, the OSS in the 40s, up to German unification and last elegiac works on German culture. Reviewing the Prussian army book in 1956 Alfred Vagts finds more of a diplomatic history eagle-eye perspective than the sociological nitty-gritty he would have preferred. Quite interesting as well, the criticism by Ludwig Freund, who describes himself as one of the last survivors of a resistance effort against Hitler in 1934: "it is obvious that Craig demands a political act of unprecedented dimensions from generals whom otherwise he chides for meddling too much in politics." It is likely that this will be remembered as one of the influential books of 1950s American historiography setting up a reconciliation with Germany on the basis of an admiring but moralizing narrative.
