Gildemeister studied in Berlin with the greats: Ranke, Boeckh, Jacob Grimm. Left his studies to become a journalist in his home town Bremen, then into politics, rising to Senator, Bürgermeister, and member of the Bundesrat. Known at the time for his sensitive translations but best remembered as a great essayist. Adolf Wilbrandt wrote in his autobiography of an evening with Gildemeister and his wife: "scheinbar nichts vom Künstler, aber höchst wohltuend kristallklarer Verstand, strahlte einen geräuschlos behaglichen Humor aus, der auf einer unerschütterlichen Gesundheit des Körpers und des Geistes ruhte.".

Martin Swales referred to Just's 1968 famous dissertation on Schnitzler as "clear, intelligent, tenaciously argued" (MLR, 1970, 223-224). Just committed suicide at age 31 and is therefore unknown today, having turned from academic writing to criticism for the Süddeutsche Zeitung from 1965 to his death. A review of this book in Die Zeit 22 Sept. 1972 praised his "Buchbesprechungen und Schriftstellerporträts, die sich durch den (in Deutschland ja nicht so verbreiteten) Mut zur klaren und daher stets mit einem gewissen Risiko verbundenen Wertung auszeichnen.
