Before 1914 it was valued as one of the best, and cheapest, sources of color reproductions. But with the outbreak of the war it became a standard means of communication between soldiers and the home front. This new edition contains about 1000 picture post cards representing the First World War, taken from the collections of the German Historical Museum in Berlin. Arranged by themes, the collection covers photographs, paintings, lithographs, and drawings of all aspects of the war - from being called up to service to dying the heroic death. Propaganda for the war plays a large part in the imagery. The edition also documents the messages on the post cards. This makes it a valuable source for the study of private communication, as well as wartime imagery.
