The author was born in Boston in 1850 and lived in Gardiner, Maine: "She helped establish the town library, organized children's reading clubs, supported public health projects, and served as president of the Maine Consumers' League (1905-11). In 1900 she and her husband founded Camp Merryweather, one of the first summer camps for boys" (DAB, 1973). Famous daughter of Julia Ward Howe and winner of Pulitzer Prize for a biography of her mother. Author of historical fiction and children's books.
