We got an in-your-face knockout surprise look at the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock on a mountain road near Tandayapa on the Western slope, but only for seconds. Other great bird sitings that I failed to get on camera were a Sword-billed Hummingbird being chased by a Black-tailed Trainbearer, a Golden-headed Quetzal, & the Amazonian Umbrellabird.
Here's what John Gooders says about the Cock-of-the-rock in The Great Book of Birds:
"Grotesque postures are adopted to show their finery to its best and they have the curious habit of remaining motionless for minutes at a time in a favoured pose."
