Bush's vision was a hyperlinked 10000 volume library in a desk, it had a great impact on the development of personal computing, and it is possible to achieve today (and even to go beyond it with the Internet). Yet in spite of Bush's early work with (analog) computer simulations in the 30's, it is very likely that he couldn't see any simulation role for Memex either from his work or the newly built Eniac. What was missing from Bush's vision and can it be invented today?
