Fleming College has restructured its academic programs into centres of
specialization that will be self-managing, using team-based processes.
This is our response to changing customer demographics and demands, a
policy shift in the Ontario colleges to learner-centred education, and,
of course, 20% funding cuts. We are working at adapting learning
organization principles, hence the change to team-based management.
However, we seem to be rebuilding the silos that were deliberately
disassembled. Each centre is being allocated a block of space for
offices and classrooms - a turf. While cross-centre collaboration is
encouraged and necessary, I wonder if assigning turf will not result in
the re-formation of the fiefdoms of old.
We welcome accounts of your experiences and suggestion. Regards from
central Ontario on a snowy April Fool's Day, Art
