Silkscreening

A silkscreen set up on our basement workbench I used a silkscreen this year, which is my usual method. I do not attempt to make all the cards identical--there are about a dozen variations: Lion-colored moves from tan to gold, and elephant-colored moves from gray to silver over the pile of paper stock, which itself is not uniform. I use lightweight for airmail, and different colors & textures. Furthermore I rubber-cemented assorted rainbows to the paper before printing. As in a baroque musical piece, space for improvisation is built-in. This way I do not get bored during the hours of printing. The problem I set myself is to summarize our year, like a Christmas newsletter, but graphically.. In addition there has to be a touch of the seasonal. And I try to experiment with something I've never done before. This year the something I've never done before is a popup card.

Key:

Herman went to Africa in '95...We both went to Peru ...We made a pilgrimage with our cousins to Rainbow Beach in Chicago (Then there was Dr. Cousins, & my other medical incident, a torn ligament on Mt. Wachusett--Looks a lot like Kilaminjaro, doesn't it?)...Herman challenged our HMO too, with his botfly bites, & HCHP was equal to the task with a tropical medicine expert who photographed Herman's leg & called his colleagues in to have a look...Herman added four birds to his Massachusetts list: mountain bluebird, yellow rail & hermit warbler. In addition he got two North American life birds: band-tailed gull & lapwing...PLUS he got a life MA mammal: black bear...Herman's MA bird list for '95 topped 300...The shark reminds Herman of all the pelagic trips he took, now that he gets a discount, & me of that "GUMS!" poster in my former dentist's office..We had white-fronted antbirds,(as well as other antbird species), at an antswarm, which Ellie tells us is a rare treat...The Humboldt penguin was a life bird for Ellie, Stauffer, Herman & me...I picked our friend G.K. up in Hartford where we saw the carousel landmark...I went to a 4-day Go workshop where I slept in a loft cleverly built above another sleeping compartment hidden behind a bookcase...Ezra came at Easter & forgot his sleeping bag twice...Petra came Nov.19 to do a rotation at the Joslin Clinic...It fit neatly into the year's iconography that the Joslin's logo is a circle with a "J" inside it...We finally got our fold-down table (Hint:"[]>" symbol inside the matchbox) installed on the porch...Herman gave me a "memory-mate" which I have applied to birdsong...We got a gray Suzuki Sidekick...Teddy got an elephant puppet from the shop at Walden Pond for her birthday the great weekend I spent in Brooklyn....Our garage acquired a faux-stall look...Our Web pages have gotten hits from 35 countries and counting...The Illini "I" is a salute to the State of Illinois which coughed up my mother's unclaimed assets at last in '95. (When this sort of thing--losing one's own money & then getting it back after a huge hassle--happened in my mother's lifetime, she saw it as a "windfall" which she happily gave to charity)...There are also 4 funerals & a wedding commemorated on this card.

Enough exposition.
