City Directories

CITY DIRECTORIES OF THE UNITED STATES COLLECTION
(for a master list of cities and years available, use this link.)
City directories are one of the best tools available for tracing immigrant ancestors; this collection contains many major cities in the United States that are covered through 1960.

LONDON DIRECTORIES FROM THE GUILDHALL LIBRARY (1677-1855)
[DA679.A133 1972x]

These volumes include surrounding towns eventually incorporated into London. Disadvantages to this collection are few complete volumes for London itself, inconsistent sequence of years available, and inaccurate reel contents labeling by the microfilming company.

MANILA CITY DIRECTORY
[DS689.M2M25]

A single reel of microfilm containing v.41 (1935-1936) of the Manila city directory published by C. W. Rosenstock.

Maps

AMERICAN MS MAPS IN BRITISH REPOSITORIES, 1763-1783
[G1105.M35 1980x]

Selected from map collections deposited with the Public Records Office, most maps were commissioned by British officials on both sides of the Atlantic to aid in colonial affairs in North America and the West Indies. The collection is more valuable to historians than to genealogists.

LANDOWNERSHIP MAPS: A CHECKLIST OF 19TH CENTURY UNITED STATES COUNTY MAPS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS (book and microfiche)
[G3701.G46L3 1967]

For Massachusetts counties maps, Suffolk is not included.

SANBORN FIRE INSURANCE MAPS
[G1241.G475 S3 1983x -- Connecticut (1884-1950), 19 rls]
[G1216.G475 S3 1983x -- Maine (1884-1949), 8 rls]
[G1231.G475 S3 1983x -- Massachusetts (1867-1970), 50 rls]
[G1221.G475 S3 1983x -- New Hampshire (1876-1956), 7 rls]
[G1236.G475 S3 1983x -- Rhode Island (1873-1961), 7 rls]
[G1226.G475 S3 1983x -- Vermont (1879-1959), 5 rls]

Another excellent aid to genealogical research, this collection by Chadwyck‑Healey is a filming of the Sanborn Fire Insurance Company's maps available in the Library of Congress. Similar to city survey maps, they give fairly good details of an area in any given city or town. A guide book describing all states available at the Library of Congress is available; Microtext retains only the films for New England.
