Other Government Records

Records of the Exchequer and Audit Department ‑‑ American Loyalist Claims
[E277.A844 1973x]

Many Loyalists who fled from their American colonial towns filed petitions with the British Government for reparations. These claims are documented in this collection where each petition gives a description and value of assets lost, as well as evidence and affidavits supporting the petitioner's claim. The set is divided into two parts: series 1 ‑‑ A012 ‑‑ covers Exchequer and Audit Department files for 1776‑1831, series 2 ‑‑ A013 ‑‑ for 1780‑1835. Both sets are indexed by name on reel 1 of their respective series. In addition to the master name index on the first reel, series A012 is supplemented by a name index of claim and evidence documents at the beginning of each volume, when available.
