in search of RI native herps

Our first order of business today was a herp walk at Fisherville Brook Sanctuary, led by Rhode Island Audubon and the Rhode Island Herpetological Society. The title of the program was: Turtles are Terrific! But we didn't see any.

We did however find toads and bullfrogs, and a gravid watersnake.

Water snake. Hands belong to Bob Maguire of RI Herpetological Society. And boy am I glad, 'cause he was the one who got to smell like snake musk for the rest of the walk.

My favorite native herp: bufo americanus, hiding in the grass.

An unexpectedly large crowd turned out for this event - mainly young boys around 8 to 10 years old. Fisherville Brook is a gorgeous sanctuary. I'd never been there before and will definitely be back, especially now that I know the rock where the turtles would be sunning themselves if they were sunning themselves. Sometimes Rhode Island people just run so true to the stereotype.
