have you ever noticed that bonsai is an anagram of Bosnia?Well, have you? Now you have. And for those Seattleites among you, the kids sometimes call Uncle Bobby Uncle Bosnia, a short transformation away from that legendary Seattle band, Uncle Bonsai. dinner for 20 on the porchDonald and Michael hosted a family reunion, on Donald's birthday, that is today, to celebrate Bobby being here from Bosnia (on his way back tomorrow), Donald's birthday, and Bobby's birthday coming up on July 30. hot sand, cold waterIn case, I haven't mentioned it in this journal, it's hot in these parts right now. So the beach was the place to be. The only trouble is the water doesn't warm up until about October, by which time the air is too cold for swimming. Did this deter us? Nope. Madre has been known to crack the ice coating on Vermont lakes to get in her morning swim. I and my cousin Cheryl happily swam back and forth along the shoreline turning bluer and bluer... Madre got out after awhile because - she says - now that she's pushing 70 she can't take the cold as long. Me, I'd've stayed in until I turned to an ice cube but I did get hungry so got out in time for dinner. what's happening in Bosnia?Donald and Bobby briefly vanished leaving the partygoers confused. Michael went to look for them . I told him: "they're downstairs at the computer checking the news from Bosnia on the internet". I asked, stupidly, " what's happening in Bosnia?" Nancy replied: "there's some kind of a war..." Pause. "...crimes tribunal." We never did find out what was so urgent they had to find out right away, but they rejoined the party ... Bobby brought lots of of European money for Elizabeth's collection, various NATO and UN and Bosnian insignia, Swiss chocolate, and a coffee grinder it was the Allston-Brighton tollbooth?!!?Auntie Elva has been telling all the folks she works with at Dunkin' Donuts that her niece (ie. me) is writing her memoirs - the stories of all her car accidents. She didn't have any new ones to tell about, so once we got done with Elva's accidents, we started reminiscing about Billy's. He holds the Egan record for vehicles totaled. Also tollbooths. So, he's telling the story for the zillionth time of how he crashed the VW Rabbit into the Allston-Brighton tollbooth on the Mass Pike. Suddenly, voices rise as one: "it was the Allston-Brighton tollbooth??????" All these years I thought it was the Newton Corner one!!!" Ah, the family history gets clearer as the years go by. What other family secrets will be revealed and family legends tumble by the time we all hit mid-life?
