Exhaust

Installing the Exhaust

Ah - a piece of cake. (an American idiom for 'easy')

....NOT!

Actually it is quite simple. Once you know HOW!

There are only 3 areas to bolt: The propellor end, the plate to the exhaust, and the plate to the engine.

After an hour or so of playing with the "order" of the 3 areas, we got it!

1. Propeller end: The studs are in the engine. Attach the gaskets and exhaust flange. With 12 mm wrenches, attach the nuts. Leave these a little loose until you get the front attached. Also, we did not 'seal' the gaskets until we were sure we installed the exhaust correctly.

2. Plate to exhaust: With 13 mm wrenches, attach the plate with rubber mounts to the exhaust. This will only fit one way. First put the bolts through the top. Then.....

2. .... put the rubber mounts on the bolts. Then attach the plate and screw on the nuts.

You CANNOT put this on the exhaust before attaching the propellor end. The unit will not fit over the motor.

3. Plate to engine: With 10 mm wrenches, attach the plate to the engine. The bolts are already on the engine. You need to remove them and re-use them to install the plate.

A piece of cake....

1. Propeller end: Attaching the gasket and exhaust flange.

Occassionally, the HKS has studs that are too short....

Your HKS dealer can send you longer ones.

Because these bolts are securely seated in the engine, you will ruin the threads when you use vice grips to unscrew them. That is not a problem because you will not re-use them.

When installing the longer studs, first just get them started. Before attaching the gasket and exhaust, screw on the nut. As soon as the stud hits resistance from the lock-nut, it will screw the stud into the engine. Then the nut will tighten.

Remove the nut. Attach the gasket and exhaust flange. Then tighten the nut.

Be sure the stud is seated all the way in the engine. About the same number of threads should stick out of all the studs. If one has too many threads, it might not be seated fully.

In this photo, the RED ARROW stud is not fully seated, as it has more threads than the GREEN ARROW stud. You have to back these out and try again.

A piece of cake!
