Mounting the Engine Pan and Engine

Mounting the Engine Pan and Engine

This page describes the Engine mounting process for installing a HKS Engine on the Odyssey.

The aluminum engine mount plates can be slightly different for different types of engines. However, the 'barry mount' process is the same. You can check with Mark if you are uncertain.

A note about the Engine Pan - It is a little difficult to know exactly how to sit the pan. We drilled holes for the studs and oil sump tank, then needed to move the pan, which widened the holes.

Later we filled in the larger holes with rubber and silicone. We described that process in the "Seal Engine Pan" section.

We also found out later that we need to cut the overhang near the wing so it lays flat against the rear wall. We cut this along the red line.

Now to mounting the engine... First you mount the engine to the engine mount plates (red arrows). You will bolt the 4 aluminum 5/8" spacers between the plate and the engine.

Next you mount the engine mount plates to the fuselage (green arrows).

Mark ships you 3 barry mounts with a red dot and 1 with a green dot. Each barry mount has a top and a bottom. The green is softer than the red and is used to dampen the torque of the engine.

As described in the documentation, you will use the bottom half of the green barry mount on a specific stud and the top half on the diagonally opposite stud.

Standing behind the engine and facing the front of the plane, place the bottom half of the green mount on the left front stud. Place the bottom half of the red mounts on the other three studs.

After positioning the engine on the plates, place the top of the green barry mount on the right rear stud. Place the tops of the red mounts on the other 3 studs.

When lowering the engine onto the lower barry mounts, be sure the mounts seat squarely into the aluminum engine plates. It's very easy to lower the engine with one of the mounts crooked, thus destroying its effectiveness. This would also destroy the barry mount very quickly.
