Preparing the Nose Shell

Preparing the Nose Shell

This shows the process we used for painting and sanding the nose shell.

At this time we did not actually mount the Nose Shell, though.

First we cut the edge so it was about even with the top of the side tube.

We clecoed the aluminum ruler as a guide and used the dremel cutting tool. Again -- the mask!

We painted the inside of the nose shell with Rustoleum flat black paint.

Mark Bierle told us we could save on weight by not painting the inside, as it will be covered with the rug.

We followed the directions of sanding the inside of the nose skin where the skin would be glued and riveted to the tubing. We used 100 grit paper.

We cleaned all the glue off the fuselage tubing.

Glue from the ribbed tape was difficult to get off. The only thing that worked for us (and worked well) was "Goof Off - the Ultimate Remover". We also used "Goo Gone" on mildly sticky areas.

We needed to touch up the paint in a few areas.

We cleaned all the tubes with "Goo Gone" first, then Windex window cleaner. We used Rustoleum flat black paint for the touch up.

We used a powerful hand-held light on all the tubing to find spots that needed a touch up of paint.

Lastly, we sanded the tubing LIGHTLY where it will get glued.

We used 400 grit paper wrapped around a wooden block. This allowed us to only sand the tangent of the tubing where the holes were.

Again, a powerful light insured that we did not miss any spots.
