Friends of the Hyde Park Branch Library The Friends' Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, March 27th. The officers of the Board of the Hyde Park Friends reported on the group's activities during the previous year, ending with the election of Directors to the Board. Kathy Adams returns for another term, and is joined by Andrina Buffong and Sheril Groce. Kathy Adams and John Wentworth are co-recipients of the 2010 Friend of the Year Award. Author Stephen Puleo gave an insightful lecture on his book, Dark Tide: The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919. Refreshments sponsored by the Friends were enjoyed by all.
Hyde Park Branch Library 10th Anniversary A lively crowd attended the 10th anniversary celebration of the rededication of the restored and expanded branch library hosted by the Friends of the Hyde Park Branch Library and the Hyde Park Historical Society's dedication of the Nancy Hannan Memorial Archive Room. The lighting of the branch library's reading room with the new energy-efficient light bulbs followed a ribbon-cutting featuring Hyde Park community representatives, one of the original architects of the expansion project, and Friends President Charles Carroll. See our Photo Gallery Page for pictures from the day's activities.
Boston Bubble Guy--Fantastic! Mike Dorval, the Boston Bubble Guy, entertained preschoolers with his demonstration of bubble making. The children were treated to bubbles of all sizes and regaled with bubble-making facts.
Fall Children's Programs A small hoard of costumed children descended on the Children's Room just before Halloween for story time. A variety of pumpkins appeared afterwards as the children assembled their very own pumpkin creations. Perennial favorite children's performer Su Eaton entertained an enthusiastic group of preschoolers and toddlers in November as part of the branch library's weekly program for young children. Appearing as the Fall Fairy, Su sang songs about changing leaves and pumpkins that included several participatory songs which the children eagerly enacted.
Fire Safety for Kids
As part of the summer program for preschoolers, firefighter and Hyde Park resident Jorge Rojas presented a lecture on fire safety to a packed Menino Hall. With the help of his two sons, he taught the young audience how to stop-drop-and-roll. In addition to explaining safety rules, Mr. Rojas dressed in full kit to demonstrate breathing apparatus and safety equipment used by firefighters. Some lucky kids got to try on different pieces of his kit at the end of his demonstration. |
