Ongoing Friends' Book Sale
Our volunteers select choice books, videos/DVDs and audio cassettes/CDs and make them available in the book case opposite the Circulation Desk throughout the year. Hardcovers, videos/DVDS and audio cassettes/CDs are $1; paperbacks are $.50; and children's books are $.25. Magazines are free. Please pay for your selections at the Circulation Desk. Additional books are available for free on the table outside Menino Hall opposite the elevator corridor.

Friends Meetings
Participate with your comments and suggestions! Meetings of the Board of Directors of the Hyde Park Friends are held monthly on the first (usually) Thursday to discuss programs and activities, as well as branch needs. Meetings are open to Friends members and the general public, however, only Directors may vote.  Please call ahead to confirm in case of re-scheduling or cancellation. Meeting location is usually Menino Hall.

Adult Book Discussion Group
Join our informal group discussing books over coffee (other refreshments welcome!) on the third Tuesday of every month, from 10:30am to 11:30am in Menino Hall. Please call ahead to the branch to check for cancellation or re-scheduling. Upcoming book titles include:

  • January 18: The Color of Water, James McBride

Chess with Charley
Kids! Learn to play chess or checkers, or test your skill! Charley sets up three times weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00pm to 5:30pm, and Saturdays from 12:30pm to 4:45pm in the Children's Room, located on the Ground Floor level. During school vacation weeks, Charley starts 1 hour earlier.

Children's Book Discussion Groups
Children in grades K through 6 can participate in these monthly half-hour meetings to talk about grade appropriate titles. Kids in grades K through 2 may join the Bookworms group, those in grades 3 and 4 may join the Pageturners group, and those in grades 5 and 6 may join the Bookends group. Books will be available one month in advance at the Children's Room. Monthly meetings are held in the Children's Room on Saturday at 9:30am for Bookworms, at 10:15am for Pageturners, and at 11am for Bookends.  Please call the branch library or check the BPL Events Calendar to confirm which Saturday of the current month the meetings will be held.

Conversation with Friends
Practice speaking English in a relaxed and informal setting.  Currently on hiatus, this group usually meets on Thursday evenings, 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Please call ahead to the branch to check for cancellation or re-scheduling.

Crochet Workshop for Kids
Learn the basic stitches of crochet and begin a simple project to complete at home.  Please bring yarn and a size G or H crochet hook.  Currently on hiatus, class sessions are held on Mondays, 4:00pm to 6:30pm, Ground Floor level.

Hyde Park Genealogy Club
Interested in genealogy and family history? Each moderated meeting features a different research topic and is an opportunity to share your project or ask questions. Monthly meetings are held on third Mondays at 6:30pm in Weld Hall. If the branch library is closed for a holiday, the club meeting will be held on the following Monday at the same time and place.

Toddler and Preschooler Story Times
Bring your pre-schooler and toddler to the Children's Room for a read-aloud story and simple craft project. Storytime is offered on Wednesdays for toddlers and  preschoolers during the months of July and August.
