I am offering some of my personal opinions and observations
to your questions

>1. What are the current "trends" in leadership?
>2. How do current trends differ from leadership trends of the past?

The trend has not differed much, except in a more intensified
manner, due to conscious or unsconsicous realization of
complexity and chaos invovled.
The basic focus in still on a "Single Individual Leadership"
and NOT on "Collective Leadership". "Single Individual Leadership"
concept is mixed with "hero" "Saviour" thinking. Hence we see a
lot of glorification of such individual, real or imaginary.

>3. What is leadership for self-directed learning in a learning
>organization?

Because of above, there is much slogan of self-directed learning
(empowerment) etc. which forms a constand CONTRADICTION but
never fully understood and realised.
