Dear Clyde,

You pose a not-uncommon situation and ask for assistance thinking it
through. I'm sure a bit more information will be helpful. You write:

>My interest: I want to manage this infrastructure. I want to plant the
>seeds and grow them to a (relatively) mature state. Then I want to hand
>it over to someone else and look for a new challenge.

So, is this a job opportunity you're vying for or are you now in the
organization and in a position to demonstrate leadership? Why do you want
to manage (lead?) this infrastructure? Is there really an infrastructure
now or does one still need to be put in place? Is the infrastructure
being called for by the owners to make it a reproducable business unit for
growth purposes?

>My problem/situation: Is there sufficient value in the achievement to
>warrant the level of frustration and simple bad management that currently
>exists and will continue for, at least, a while. Or is this a situation
>of diminishing returns whiuch I should help as much as I can while I am
>there but continue to seek another opportunity?

All experiences can be valuable. How do you want to proceed? Do you have
the reserves of energy needed by the organization to help them through
this phase? You would need a clear vision of the outcome before you can
commit your creativity to this enterprise. Is there anyone else who has
the requisite energy you can partner with?

>Any thoughts? I think I am a little too close to be totally objective in
>this assessment right now.

Close your eyes...Can you smell the forest? Can you hear the trees? Open
your eyes. Are you in the picture or outside looking in? You'll know
your role when it fits.

Be Well,
