Ben,
Good on ya! Another "heretic against vision".
Missions are specific goal focussed and, I think, have a pretty clear
historical meaning if you want to use that word. Mostly it's overdone as
Ben says.
But "vision". It's not just that the word is overused. It's not just
that it can't be questioned (and therefor comes under challenge from me).
It's that vision in its earlier and more sacred uses referred to
possibility and was always and only inspired. Those who would rather
manipulate than lead, inspire or do the work it takes to achieve a "state
of vision" have usurped the word for poor ends.
And, if the truth be told, most of us at work and most of our corporations
are just doing what we/they are doing. Nothing grand. Something pretty
good. Something pretty basic. Why can't we just tell the truth and go
from there?
We don't need to "align on a vision" because we already share an
understanding that is very deep, very complex and almost totally implicit.
