Rol provocatively ask us...

Great questions....

I was at a learning community on 'principle based whole sytem change' in
Orlando last week and one of the participants was Barry Johnson who I
believe has written some books and materials on polarity management. We
had some interesting sessions with him looking at the shadow side of the
principles we believe in... His thesis (if I have got it right after a
couple of conversations) is around the idea that we go from pole to pole
or down the middle and that there are alternative ways to manage
polarities.. he has a nice way of mapping a polarity whereby you look at
either end and do the positive and negative consequences of the pole..
then you look at the direction you are heading and the effect of the
learning curve as you head that way and expereince more of the negative
consequences than you might like...

Looks better on flipchart!!

Perhaps the issues might be what forms of insecurity and instability would
I structure in and how would I design in the processes and attractors to
support emergence ..... ??

Downsizing seems an extreme way to go to create instability... and yet I
can see ways in which the new forms of psychological contract could be a
great deal for people and for learning .. as this thing swings (and I am
seeing it happening in some places) the old loyalty deal is gone .. we
have new imperatives for involvement and providing opportunities for
learning because it is enlightened self-interest which keeps people around
- control just won't be an option... ??
