James Autry in his video Love and Profit points out the difficult "call"
that managers must constantly make:
balancing the rights of the individual with the rights of the group.
Much of what I see on this thread and the people problem thread is trying
to come up with this "balance". Perhaps it is an inescapable dillema -
where the best thing a manager can do is realize there are not easy
answers when dealing with complex issues. He makes the point that making
these decisions about dealing with a poor performer are of course
difficult and the personnel policies are of little help, which I agree.
And while one of my values is that all people have value, as a manager I
cant spend all of my time dealing with one person.
