Regarding the thread of knowing versus doing, Dr. Price said:

"Agreed. Why beat up on schools - which is an impression I got from
some discussion on the thread - when it is society's dominant values
that drive schools to be whatever they are."

I have the following to add:


Schools should move from passive learnign to active learning, so
that students can learn by doing. Active learning has been shown to
be more effective than passive learning, and can be accomplished via
lab-type exercises, case studies, team-projects, etc.
