I took the morning off from the cat shelter so I would have time to do some touristy thing or other with Joan. After a late breakfast Joan decided the thing she most wanted to do was go to the Museum of Science to see Everest. The Everest film actually premiered at the Museum of Science because David Breashears has local connections and the museum has a special connection to Mt. Everest through the mapping work of former museum head Brad Washburn. It's so odd for anything to have its premiere in Boston that even though Everest is playing in countless IMAX theaters across the country now, it still seemed worth seeing it in Boston. With Joan-west here having lived the California experience and now living in Italy, I'm feeling the backwater status of Boston (and all of Massachusetts acutely - even though she's quite happy to be here). End of defensive digression. We tried to get tickets for the 4:00 PM show but it was sold out. We succeeded in getting tickets to the 6:00 PM show, which of course meant we had to drive there in rush hour traffic. It was well worth it though. The movie made me feel dizzy and nauseous as a good high altitude climb should, and I was unexpectedly moved emotionally by the story. We checked out the special Everest exhibit in the museum afterwards, getting a big kick out of the scale model Everest with lights to simulate dawn and dusk and every lighting condition in between. The climbing outfits from the 1920's compared to today's high tech materials were pretty amazing too. I couldn't imagine climbing in a tweed sport coat with a wool scarf around my neck! The best part of the exhibit though was a series of 3D photographs of Everest taken by the aforementioned Brad Washburn. Talk about ice! It started to rain again as we were finding our way to South Boston through the Big Dig to deliver Joan to her friend Ann's house in Southie. What should have been straightforward was confusing partly because of the Big Dig and partly because of the rain. By the time we got there, all I wanted to do was go home and sleep. |
