Today, the date big adventure was a trip to the flower show at the Bayside expo center. I parked my car at the T station at Alewife and took the train to JFK/umass where I got the shuttle bus to the Bayside. The outside temperature was only 17 degrees and it was very windy so it boom felt even colder standing there waiting for the bus. Once I got inside the show by sell like I had encountered a tropical heat wave. The dancing hippo topiary revolving right in front of the entrance added to the tropical feeling. The entrance was surrounded by topiary Disney characters. Mickey, Goofy, Minnie, Pluto, they were all there and they were all green.

The landscape I liked the best was a we creation of a historic garden, which the Smithsonian created from an anti antique lantern slide. It had a fountain in the middle and a wide variety of shrubs and flowers. It was supposed to represent the golden age of American gardening. All of the landscapes were much bigger than my yard. Sometimes I think I should hire a gardener to redesign my yard as if it were a flower show exhibit it would be an even bigger challenge than entering a landscape in the flower show.

The state park department had an exhibit showing 3 state parks, 1 of which was Salisbury beach. I got a kick out of seeing beach grass exhibited along with all the big deal flower arrangements and orchid displays. My favorite exhibit is the bonsai trees. They look like tiny ancient forests filled with mystery. actually everything is my favorite because it feels so much like spring has come at last. Even though we have had a relatively mild winter with warm temperatures it has been very gray and as always what I crave toward the end of winter is bright colors. I think this year I had forgotten how many colors there are in nature. Flowers are amazing.

The most unexpected exhibit was a litter of pigs. The sow is only one year old but this is her second litter already. They looked so cute rooting around trying to find food. I can see why someone might want a pig for a pet when it is little. Too bad those cute little pigs grow up to be giants in less than a year.

By the time I left I had warmed up enough that the bitter cold actually felt refreshing for about half a minute at the bus stop. When I got on the train to go back to Cambridge it was already rush hour. The train was full. They had trouble with the doors, which would not close even when no one was leaning on them. And once we stopped for a long time in the tunnel between stations. It was a bit more of an adventure than I thought it would be. I had plenty of time to check out what people were reading. One man was balancing time magazine on his hat, which he held in the palm of one hand while he held on to the pole. An Asian woman was studying a briefing book about capital punishment. A young black teenager who sat next to me was deep into the crucible, and an Asian man across from him was reading living faith by Jimmy Carter.

By the time I got back to Cambridge, I had just enough time to get a salad at bread and circus before it was time to go to my meeting.

I dictated this with power secretary. It still doesn't understand me very well but I have trained it to recognize a lot more words.
