snow

Mark called about an hour or so ago to confirm our lunch at Tea Tray in the Sky. He said he saw only a few snow flurries in Worcester and I looked out the window and saw only rain and the occasional snow flake. Well, now it's snowing. The weather forecast on the radio is calling for 1 to 3 inches this afternoon but I am not believing them. The weather forecasts have been less than credible of late. Not that New England weather forecasts are all that accurate anyway, but I think El Niño has thrown them off. I meant to get the Sapporo pictures developed at the 1 hour photo this morning so I could finally complete the album, but I lingered in bed - what else is new? - and took a very long shower and now haven't enough time to get the pictures before I leave. I suppose I could have them developed someplace while we are lunching and teaing. So, it's off to Tea Tray in the Snow er I meant Sky.

tea tray

Well, I drove into Cambridge in a snow squall and met Mark at Tea Tray in the Sky. However, Tea Tray in the Sky was closed. It's Monday. We ate lunch at Marcella's. I had a double espresso before my ziti with pesto and olives , and another single espresso afterwards. This managed to keep me awake for shopping in the snow all afternoon as well as showing Mark my Hokkaido pictures - except for the Sapporo ones, which I never did take to be developed today.

Surprisingly, I found gifts for my walking buddies that came in just under the $5 per person limit. Managed to find a few other things for various people on my list too. I even found some unique birthday greetings for the brothers whose birthdays the family is celebrating on Sunday. Then it was on to Sasuga to see whether the promised holiday influx of Totoro gift items had indeed occurred. It had. I bought a cat bus. I also bought Dance, Dance, Dance by Haruki Murakami - the guy who wrote A Wild Sheep Chase. After a full afternoon of snow and shopping, we chilled out at Hollywood Espresso over hot chocolate while waiting out the rush hour traffic.

Driving home in the snow wasn't too bad until I got to my condo complex, which was a sheet of black ice. But I'm safe and sound in my house with Wilbur stretched across my neck.

World AIDS Day

I'd planned to write something for World AIDS Day today, but it just won't come out the fingertips. Wordsworth (I think it was Wordsworth) said you should wait 7 years after an event before you write about it and it has only been two years since Steven died. Everything has changed since then. Steven's garden is gone - a new building is being built there. The new drug treatments are allowing people with AIDS to live longer. I no longer feel like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop - that nagging "when will Thomas get sick" thought at the back of my mind. I've misplaced the phone number for the support group for sisters of people with HIV. The only thing that hasn't changed is we never talk about it.
