Cornflakes, Specimen Processing, and AbkhaziaRokugo, 6:20 AM, Sundayabout yesterdayAfter our breakfast of cornflakes yesterday, Zsolt gave us a lecture on the dendrological atlas project, the importance of pronouncing the Latin names correctly, the state of arboreta around the world... it went on a long time and Joe asked a lot of questions. I'm still jet-lagged. Edith made ratatouille for lunch - no squash because what she thought was a squash in the market turned out to be a pumpkin. After lunch we processsed specimens. Some wet from being preserved in alcohol, a few fresh ones. Also double checked dry ones when Carol took them out of the plant dryer. Rokugo, 9:00 PM., SundayProcessing specimens in the work room all day today. We laughed a lot - hystericaly and irrationally. The 9:00 siren at the fire station just went off. It goes off at noon and 9:00PM every day. The fire station is right next door to our cabin so we get a good blast. Already we have determined it pointless to go to bed before the siren... Tomorrow, Sergei is going home to Abkhazia, where he manages an arboretum. I never heard of Abkhazia until I met Sergei. It's a newly independent republic on the Black Sea coast that is claimed by Georgia and under blockade by Russia as well as Georgia. Sergei had to go the long way around to get here because he can't go through Russia.
