Rokugo, 7:30 AM, Saturday

I'm sitting on the floor in the living room of the apartment I share with Carol and Dot, waiting for the coffee water to boil. I slept fairly well last night on the tatami and futons, waking up only a couple of times. It rained hard during the night but the sun is out now.

My room is 4 1/2 tatami, Dot's is 6, Carol's is 3. We have a small living room with a low table, a stove for heat, a television, and coffee and tea supplies. We also have a kitchen area with a sink, and a bathroom with a western type toilet seat attached over a Japanese style pit toilet.

Last night after dinner, Zsolt and Istvan briefed us a little bit on the project. Hiromitsu briefed us on the rules of the university forest.

Dinner was traditional Japanese - arranged on a rectangular plate - some pickles, a piece of fish, shredded lettuce, eggplant, something I didn't recognize, something else I didn't recognize, a slice of tomato, and a whole squid arranged in slices on a separate plate (sor of reconstructed like a squid jigsaw puzzle). Also soup with tofu and sugar snap peas.

The coffee water has boiled. I am drinking instant coffee from a mug with a picture of a sailing ship and the legend "Adventure plow through the waves."

Breakfast is at 9:00 this morning because it'sthe weekend and we're on our own - no staff to cook for us.

I have my back to the window and the sun feels warm. This apartment feels cozy.
