On the plane

We're about a half hour from landing in Anchorage. I see snow covered mountains, a huge blue lake, and fair weather clouds below. A broad banked river flows into the lake. At least that's what I think I'm seeing. It could be a bay and islands. ...

The patterns of snow and ice curve sinuously around the mountains. Some of the snow looks rippled and some smooth, untouched. .

We're passing Mt. McKinley. My Russian seatmate snaps a photo. The two highest peaks seem to float as if they had no connection to the earth at all. The white peaks fade into blue space above the clouds. It seems unreal to see the peaks jutting into clear sky when the world below is covered in clouds.
