SANS - SANS (SysAdmin, Audit, Networking and Security) is a clearinghouse for computer and network security information. The SANS Institute provides security training.

Counterpane - Bruce Schneier's security consulting company that produces Cryptogram, the free monthly e-mail newsletter on computer security and cryptography. Bruce Schneier is the author of Applied Cryptography, required reading for anyone dealing with computer and network security.

NIST - National Institute of Standards and Technology. NIST's mission is to develop and promote measurement, standards, and technology to enhance productivity, facilitate trade, and improve the quality of life. NIST manages conformance with many standards including FIPS, Common Criteria, and so on.

FIPS - Federal Information Processing Standard. FIPS 140-2 (May 25, 2002) is the current standard of conformance for modules implementing cryptographic algorithms and security functions. Conformance is managed through the Cryptographic Module Validation (CMV) Program under NIST's Computer Security Resource Center (CSRC). Independent testing laboratories like Entrust CygnaCom perform conformance testing.

NIAP - National Information Assurance Partnership. This NIST organization manages validation testing against the Common Criteria. Independent testing laboratories like Entrust CygnaCom perform validation testing.

Common Criteria - An international security standard for describing security parameters. The Common Criteria prescribes an evaluation methodology for validating security claims expressed within the framework of the standard. The Common Criteria is aligned with International Standard ISO/IEC 15408:1999.
