Eliot's note for line 221 mentions Sappho. Sappho was a Greek female poet who lived on the island of Lesbos (and elsewhere in the Mediterrian). She is especially noted for her poems of female-female love. From her name, and the island at which she lived, the words sapphic and lesbian were created.
