STATS All Stars, 1901-19

See also the annual list or summary count of appearances on the "All America Teams" selected by contemporary Baseball Magazine.

STATS, Inc., selected an All Star Team for each major league season beginning in 1876, in The All-Time Major League Baseball Sourcebook (1998). STATS also named All-Deadball Era teams for the American League and for the National League. (See the All Deadball Era teams.)

Here the annual STATS All Stars for 1901-19 are presented by position and league. Each player named at more than one fielding position or for more than one major league is marked (*) at each listing.

Each annual All Star Team includes one player at each of 8 "regular" positions and four pitchers. Catcher was only semi-regular position during the period: the contemporary Baseball Magazine named two or more catchers to its annual team for each league to 1914; one catcher from 1915.

Nicknames. Here Frank Baker is "Frank Baker" but Walter Maranville is "Rabbit Maranville". As a writer or a reader, I am uneasy about when a nickname is appropriate. On the other hand, "Frank 'Home Run' Baker" is clear and complete but intolerably long in a table.

Outfield positions. Should an honorary "team" include one leftfielder, one centerfielder, one rightfielder? Should an honorary "team" include at least one centerfielder? Opinions differ. STATS treats the outfield as one position played by three members of each team. In 4 of 20 AL seasons and 8 of 20 NL seasons, the trio of outfielders selected by STATS includes no regular CF.
