    Introduction

This report supplements the listing of annual "All America Teams" selected by Baseball Magazine 1908-1919. Those listings and these counts are limited in scope to 1908-1919, although BBMag selected the teams every year through 1950.

During our period, BBMag annually selected one team of players from the American League and one from the National League. They did not recognize the Federal League with a team. The one annual "All America Team" was composed of roughly half the players on the two league teams, with one exception. In 1910, Walter Johnson was not among three AL pitchers but he was one of five All America pitchers, four from the AL and one from the NL.

Beginning in 1915, each team was a Ten: a regulation Nine with two pitchers. Before 1915, the teams were larger because they included larger "batteries" of pitchers and catchers. Indeed, the composition of the battery changed every year.

Number of pitchers and catchers on each "team":
             P C
       1908 5 2
       1909 5-6 3
       1910 3-5 2
       1911 4-6 3-4
       1912 3 2
       1913 2 1 (same on the 1913-only second team)
       1914 3 2
    1915-19 2 1

Every selection is counted here. Interpretation of the count for pitchers or catchers is complicated by the variable size of the battery, but those complications are left to the reader. The 1913 "second team" is unique in our period; those selections are noted here ("2d-1913") but are not counted.

    Leaders across all positions

Ty Cobb was selected to the A.L. Team and the All America Team every year, 1908-1919. Eddie Collins, Tris Speaker, and Walter Johnson were selected almost as regularly once they were established.

Count by league - AL dominance

The American League dominated at the seven regular positions, the National League at catcher. Baseball Magazine chose 54 regulars from the AL, 30 from the NL, typically 5 AL and 2 NL. Three of the seven were usually named Cobb, Collins, and Speaker.
