Judy:

As an instructional designer, I have frequently analyzed performance
problems with the help of supervisors and managers, along with using
policy references and other performance-related data.

An effective learning organization would create a process that takes
the information from those sources listed above and feed it back to
the process user in real time so that they know exactly what, where,
and how they deviated from the optimum process practice. Then,
corrective feedback would be available on-the-spot to the user.

So how would an organization put this kind of performance support
measure in place? Well, there are several technology-based answers.
They are costly upfront but could reap many benefits in the long run.
An example from our training field would be an on-line course
development package that provides all you need to know on how to
design, develop, and evaluate a custom-built course. The software
would suggest learning strategies, map out a project plan while
providing feedback to you regarding your performance in relation to
the plan.

Other ways to create a performance support system would include more
human interfaces but would also include a great deal of performance
data that would be available to managers and supervisors but most
importantly to the process user along with process standards they
could compare to. The data would tell the user they have a performance
deficiency and then they could see a manager or supervisor about ways
to correct their performance.

The key is to get the performance data to the user in real time and
educate them or inform them on what the data means so they know
immediately whether they are performing well or need improvement. And,
if they need improvement they need to know specifically what options
they have to improve their performance. They could choose which option
to take based on their time and the complexity of the performance
deficiency.

I hope I shed some light on your question...
