I agree with David. The question is -- like what someone else said
recently, perhaps Michael M, that the company needs to be appealing in
some way, and when it is, people will invest themselves in it. I have had
the personal experience several times in my life, of having situations I
loved so much I could not prevent myself from investing my energy. This
is the goal, to create such an atmosphere.

Joe Katzman asks " How does one attract and retain such people (knowledge
workers)?"

In related musings, I have come to beleive that people want "meaning" in
their work life. They want to feel they make a difference as they do
something worhtwhile. People work very hard (regardless of rules about
hours and so forth) on things that are important to them.

I believe we can best retain workers by addressing personal mastery
related issues as we develop shared visions.
