I happen to be looking at a fascinating paper right now entitled
"Organizing for Effective New Product Development: The Moderating Role of
Product Innovativeness" by Olson, Walker, and Ruekert, in Journal of
Marketing, January, 1995.
They have studied when teams are particularly efficient and effective, and
when functional organizations are more appropriate. They are quantitative
in their approach as well as qualitative. Excellent paper. We actually
use the results to decide what kind of organization to create in different
situations.
