Regarding the comment that within a self-directed work team,
"the mission becomes (like) the constitution."
A well written mission statement can be further defined by including
organizational values (the "how" of achieving the mission). The mission
and values together when integrated thoroughly into an organization's
culture (and this can take years) can become even more than the
constitution, they can become the "boss," in situations where leadership
is shared.
