My response - and here it is in writing - would be:

"In my admittedly limited experience, I have found that "traditional
wisdom" generally proves to be neither traditional nor wise. Very little
in the experience of others whom I have encountered refutes this
judgement, and I believe a careful study of any "traditional wisdom" will
yield the same result."
