I prefer to read the Golden Rule with heavy emphasis on the word "as"
compared to your word "what". "As" means to me the "way" we want others to
treat us and would certainly include kindly, fairly and compassionately.
In order to be kind to another person, we would necessarily have to make
an attempt to know and understand something about them and their needs.

I chose this interpretation because I believe that the author of the rule
would have wanted this inspite of any language or semantic difficulties.
