Sue Starr here, on the rocks in Yellowknife, NWT. Canada

For the next 2 weeks, I'm attending a course, designed for the North, on
Community-Based Adult Education. There are 17 of us on the course from
many different locations in the NWT, including some adult educators from
small Inuit or Dene Communities. We began today with a discussion on our
various experiences of community and communities. There is a great
struggle now to heal/rebuild our small northern communities, and some of
this has already surfaced in our discussions. Some of our course will
relate to building "Learning Communities". As I'm from a corporate
environment (Telephone Company) just beginning to apply LO principles, I'm
interested in what I can bring to the group that will be useful, and what
I can take back from this 'education perspective' that I can apply in my
work.

I'd like to hear from any of you who have some thoughts about creating
'learning communities'. Some current characteristics of these communities
are: - a desire to incorporate traditional wisdom in the
process;significant illiteracy. This is a time of high risk and
opportunity for many of these communities, as a new territory is being
formed (by 1999) and the current government is moving
responsibility/functions/funding out to the communities.

Can you help me?

Sue
