The rich conversation about the development of values throughout life has
caused me to revisit Robert Kegan's work, In Over Our Heads: The Mental
Demands of Modern Life. Harvard University Press, 1994. From the
prologue, "In spite of the fact that the developmental trajectories of
Freud and Piaget, which constitute the twin towers in the field, reach
their conclusions in adolescence, most of this book is devoted to
transformations of consciousness after adolescence. The cultural
phenonmenon is the *hidden curriculum,* the idea that to the list of
artifacts and arrangements a culture creates and the social sciences study
we should add the claims or demands the culture makes on the minds of its
constituents." I sincerely believe this book will greatly inform this
very poignant learning organization conversation on complexity and values.
