Gary Scherling quoted the Golden rule: "Do unto others as you would have
them do unto you." and the Platinum rule(fromTony Alesandros): "Do unto
others as they would want you to do unto them." I agree with Gary that
this must be the heart or original meaning of the Golden rule. In fact
the Golden rule helped me grasp the essence of a commonly used jargon
these days - "customer orientation" with considerable ease. If I expect
my supplier - internal or external to be more understanding and cater to
my needs, then I too need to be more understanding and cater to his/her
needs to the best of my ability. Because I want others to treat me the
way I want to be treated, I treat them the way they would like to be
treated. Change Management theory suggests that the best way to start
change is to start with yourself. So if I want others to treat me as I
want to be, then I have to start first. As a concept, this has been
helpful. Sheer laziness has prevented me from fully living upto this goal.
