I've been trying not to write this message ever since the discussion of
"boss" came up, but finally succumbed.

To me the word "boss" has just one meaning: a nickname for the person I
see a few times a year, usually at a departmental party. (Yes, I'm a
faculty member, which is why I shouldn't have sent this message.)

But when I was in industrial research it had a different meaning: the
person I went to to try to get him to correct the mistakes others were
making.

I'm trying hard to get my tongue out of my cheek.
