It may not surprise people to hear me say yes. I think one can use the
ladder without believing or understanding the theory just as, for example,
pigeon breeders bred beautiful pigeons without understanding Darwins
theory [they gave him the idea] but the theory nonetheless expanded future
practice. Please this is not an attempt to trivialise the ladder. For me
understanding a possible cause of 'that stuff' certainly helped the use of
it, not least because it helped me stop making people wrong [at least
soemtimes].
