John,

Try "Finite and Infinite Games" for a good insight into this
cooperative/competitive question. The book suggests that competition
is healthy and successful in finite games. Cooperation is healthy
and successful lin infinite games. And all finite games are played
within infinite games.

This is a different cut rather than an argument against "competition
is a form of cooperation".
